“GROWING UP AND SEEING THE MALLARDS, THE FISH, THE DEER ON THE WALL—IT’S THE KIND OF NOSTALGIC IMAGERY THAT GOT ME EXCITED TO PUT IT ON BAGS THAT LOOK GREAT IN THE CITY, JUST AS THEY DO IN THE COUNTRY.” PATRIC HANLEY

About Filson

Established in Seattle in 1897, Filson is the leading outfitter and manufacturer of unfailing goods and apparel. Built upon a reputation for reliability, Filson has been trusted by generations of anglers and hunters, engineers and explorers, mariners and ranchers, and anyone who refuses to stay indoors.

Clinton C. Filson established his company to outfit prospectors driven to strike gold regardless of environmental obstacles. These miners were soon joined by hunters, anglers, engineers, and explorers. The hardiness of Filson Mackinaw Coats and Wool Field Pants made them unrivaled for keeping comfortable and staying alive in the wilderness.

Filson x Patric Hanley Limited Edition Luggage

Filson collaborated with New York City-based artist, Patric Hanley, who specializes in oil paintings. Hanley’s exclusive collaboration with Filson draws influence from his Midwestern roots, featuring motifs inspired by classic American fauna. The team at the Filson Journal caught up with Patric Hanley at his studio to learn about his craft and the creation of their limited-edition Rugged Twill bags. Each of these unique, limited-edition bags feature a detailed wildlife painting painstakingly rendered by Patric Hanley. Each of these bags is a one-off with these stunning graphics, a true collector’s piece.

Filson built each of these bags with Rugged Twill sourced from England’s famed British Millerain, an industrial-strength fabric that’s been lightly waxed for water resistance and outstanding abrasion resistance. The Bridle Leather handles are from hides vegetable-tanned by Pennsylvania’s Wickett & Craig, leather tanning experts since 1867. Their slow deliberate process steeps premium cowhide a proprietary tree bark solution over the course of weeks to produce a leather that’s supple, resists stretching and is incredible durable. The heavy-gauge brass from YKK® is solid brass, so it can never rust.

Filson’s Weatherproof Roughout Leather Original Briefcase is a rustic heirloom-quality variation on their most-proven briefcase. It’s built with vegetable-tanned leather that’s waterproofed from the inside-out during the tanning process for permanent water resistance. The premium leather is tanned by Pennsylvania’s Wickett & Craig in their proprietary bark solution that slowly transforms the hide into durable, pliable leather that won’t absorb moisture and stands up to daily use for generations.
