While workwear is designed to be durable, it’s also made to be comfortable. Fashion mavens love the simple styling of work clothes. They are perfect for getting dirty while looking chic. Workwear was originally designed to be durable and comfortable to allow workers to be safe and efficient, but now fashion bloggers can wear them and still look great.

Taylor Stitch’s workwear is made from Boss Duck, which is built with a carefully balanced—and 100% Responsible—blend of hemp, recycled polyester, and organic cotton, plus a touch of stretch for extra comfort. This is the toughest wearing, hardest working fabric Taylor Stitch has ever offered.

We’ve developed this new guide to Taylor Stitch’s Boss Duck to help you find the workwear you’ll need this fall.

Boss Duck is Tougher than Sails

Cotton duck is the most popular material for workwear: a plain-yet-strong woven canvas for garments and industrial items. Duck is named for the Dutch word doek. Originally, duck was a linen canvas used for sailors’ trousers and outerwear. Today, cotton duck is related to another type of work-ready duck; duct tape, often called “duck tape,” which was originally made by adding adhesive to cotton duck.

“Tougher than nails” is an expression that’s often used to describe a person who is incredibly strong and tough. The same type of canvas duck used for many work clothes has often been used for traditional boat sails, since the thick cotton canvas is incredibly resistant to tearing and rough wear. Located on the inside of a tent, the fabric usually comes in drab colors like unbleached white, tan, and shades of brown or green. Even if cotton canvas does get dirty from mud, dirt, and water, it still looks a lot cleaner than usual work pants.

There are many advantages of cotton duck workwear fabric, including:
  • The surface is relatively smooth and snagging and ripping are not common problems.
  • It probably ranks among the best of true workwear fabrics in its ability to block the wind (the importance of which can outrank everything else on a blustery winter jobsite).
  • It is somewhat resistant to burning, as a few small sparks or hot ashes won’t ruin the fabric. Unlike nylon or other synthetics, if you’re sleeping by a campfire or welding in the shop, acrylic fabrics will have tiny pinholes everywhere.
  • When it arrives, the material may feel stiff and uncomfortable, but after being washed and worn a few times, it should feel quite comfortable.

Taylor Stitch has made their own version of Cotton Duck fabric, which they call Boss Duck. This high quality fabric is made from a carefully balanced blend of hemp, recycled polyester, and organic cotton, which creates a fabric that is exceptionally soft and exceptionally comfortable.

This custom-milled canvas has a little bit of everything in it. Hemp is easy on the environment and tough as nails, but it can be a touch rough on the skin, so Taylor Stitch blended it with soft recycled polyester and organic cotton for extra comfort. A touch of stretch ensures you won’t have to worry about rips or tears when there’s a job to be done, while a light stone wash gives the Boss Duck workwear a well-worn feel from day one.

Now that we’ve taken a deep dive into the Boss Duck fabric, let’s take a look at what Taylor Stitch is doing with their Boss Duck fabric. Here are some of my favorite items from the collection.

The Camp Pant in Boss Duck

The Camp Pant—Taylor Stitch’s slim-fitting work pant, cut from a proprietary blend of hemp, organic cotton, recycled polyester, with a touch of stretch—is always an asset on the job site. Thanks to a tapered silhouette and understated bar-tack stitching, your pair will look right at home at the office or out on the town, but don’t let its looks fool you: this is a work pant through and through.

The Boss Duck fabric is bold and durable, and the Tobacco color adds a little yellow-gold to the brown fabric so the pants can pass for casual wear. You’ll live in these pants. They’re incredibly soft, broken in but without looking worn out.

The Chore Pant, a classic from Taylor Stitch, returns in a blend of rugged Boss Duck. With a washed finish and just a touch of stretch, this Chore Pant will feel well worn before you even put it to work. With reinforced knees, handy pen slots, and easy-entry slash pockets, it is ready for anything.

These work pants are perfect for any situation, whether it’s cool or warm. It can breathe when the weather is warm and it is sturdier and more durable than most in cooler conditions. These pants are great to wear for anything from clearing the gutters on the roof on your house to wearing them on a camping trip. They’re terrific.

Like the Camp Pant, The Chore Pant is available in the Tobacco, Sand, Stone, Coal, and Camo colorways.

Shafts of sunlight filtered through an evergreen canopy, the scent of dry leaves and damp soil, the gentle bite of a crisp breeze. If you ask the folks at Taylor Stitch, there’s nothing better than throwing on your trusty pack and setting out into the woods during the first flush of fall…right when the leaves start to turn. Fall is our favorite time of year to gear up and wander the wilds. The Wildwood Collection celebrates that special sense of stillness this time of year brings to the forest, drawing textures and colors from autumnal wilds in cozy garment weights that are perfect for the season.
