Three Layer System
Before diving into fleece, it’s important to grasp the concept of the three layer system. This method is essential for dressing appropriately for activities like skiing, sailing, and hiking. The 3-layer system consists of a base layer, mid-layer, and shell jacket. The Base layer is designed to wick away moisture and provide sun protection if you choose to remove other layers. It serves as the foundation for regulating temperature and managing moisture. Three Layer System.
This three layering system is versatile and adaptable, allowing you to tackle activities like skiing, snowboarding, sailing, hiking, or any winter adventure with confidence.
Essentially, layering in cold weather means wearing multiple garments of different levels of thickness to provide warmth, regulate body temperature, and shield against harsh conditions. The main advantage is the ability to easily add or remove layers as needed during your activity.
Whether you’re planning to tackle a mountain or just need a versatile fleece for your travels, road trips, campfires, or Netflix binge-watching sessions, it’s important to determine how you will primarily use the jacket. This will help you decide if you need advanced technical features for intense activities or something more stylish and cozy.
If you solely want a warm layer for your upper body, there’s no need to splurge on expensive jackets with multiple pockets and self-fixing hoods. And when it comes to cold-weather adventure sports, a heavyweight fleece may not be necessary; instead, easily adjustable lightweight or midweight layers are key for staying active.
Follow the golden “three-layer principle”: wear a moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid-layer, and a waterproof outer layer to protect yourself from the elements. Fleeces can be used as mid-layers, but they should be kept fitted to avoid overheating.
What is Fleece?
It’s hard to find a jacket that can match the coziness of a fleece one. Fleece is a plush and warm fabric created from polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is a moisture-repelling fiber.
In 1979, the company now known as Polartec LLC, formerly Malden Mills, introduced the world to fleece. Its CEO at the time, Aaron Feuerstein, chose not to patent Polar Fleece, allowing for other companies to produce similar materials.
During the early 1980s, Yvon Chouinard collaborated with Malden Mills to create the first Synchilla fleece jacket. This revolutionary piece was made from synthetic fibers and offered benefits such as being fast-drying, easy to pack, and lightweight. It was a welcomed alternative to the poorly-made blue and tan pile sweaters that were popular at the time, or the traditional materials like wool, down, or cotton that were commonly used for mountaineering clothing in previous decades.

Synchilla jackets were initially popular among mountaineers due to their vibrant colors and easy mass production. However, over the course of two decades, they became a staple midlayer for various outdoor activities like mountaineering, climbing, skiing, backpacking, and fly fishing. The North Face and Patagonia were amongst the top brands selling millions of fleece jackets annually, and they also gained popularity beyond the realm of outdoor sports.
Polyester fleece is well-known for its softness, making it a popular choice for mid layer clothing. While not as technically advanced as other options, it offers convenience and comfort similar to wearing a sweater indoors. Fleece garments are also low maintenance and come in various colors and patterns, making them versatile additions to your wardrobe. Typically made from polyester, a synthetic material, fleece provides insulation at different fabric weights. While not the lightest or warmest option available, a fleece jacket is suitable for recreational activities but may not be suitable for extreme expeditions.
Polyester fleece is available in different weights – lightweight, midweight, and heavyweight – usually marketed as 100, 200, and 300 weight. This material is great because it retains warmth even if it gets wet and dries quickly.
A specific type of fleece has a pile structure is known for its breathability, making it a popular choice for high-energy activities in cold conditions. Lumberjacks who work physically demanding jobs in the cold often prefer this type of fleece. However, it does not offer much protection from wind.
Fleece has good breathability, so you are less likely to overheat while wearing it. However, this breathability means that wind can easily pass through the fabric and steal warmth from your body. To combat this, it is important to have a shell layer on hand when using fleece as a middle layer. Alternatively, you could opt for wind fleece, which includes an inner membrane to block wind.

Types of Available Fleece Fabrics
In order to simplify the selection process of a fleece jacket, we have divided them into five main categories: Ultralight, Lightweight, Midweight, Heavyweight, and Windproof. While some fleeces may not perfectly fit into these groups, the information provided should help guide you towards the most suitable option.
Fleece clothing can be found in a variety of thickness levels, suitable for all kinds of weather and activities. Some types of fleece include standard, grid-patterned, membrane, and tighter woven options.
Standard Fleece is commonly used as part of a layering system to provide added warmth and protection. This system, consisting of a base layer, mid layer (i.e. fleece), and shell, is the most effective and widely used method for optimizing the benefits of fleece.
Grid Patterned fleece is a lightweight material that dries rapidly and effectively while retaining its insulating properties. The grid design aids in removing sweat and drawing moisture to the fabric’s surface. The open spaces between the grids trap air, providing added insulation and warmth. An example of this technology being used can be seen in Polartec’s® Power Grid fabric.
A type of fleece known as a membrane fleece has a breathable layer sandwiched between two layers of fleece to provide protection against wind. Popular types include Windbloc® by Polartec® and Windstopper® by Gore®.
By using a tighter weave, fleece can effectively reduce wind chill while still allowing for breathability. For instance, the Polartec Wind Pro is a prime example of this technology in action.

Good to Know: Before purchasing a fleece, it is important to plan for the outdoor activities you will be engaging in. A 300 weight fleece would be too heavy and bulky for trail running or climbing, while a 100 fleece may not provide enough warmth in extreme cold conditions. Finding the right balance is key in ensuring that your fleece is suitable for your needs.
