The Pioneer Platform is designed to be tough and allows you to load or unload your gear quickly and easily.
I’ve had a Rhino Rack Backbone System with Pioneer Platform roof rack installed on my Jeep for several years. I’ve put it through some serious abuse on my various adventures by mounting a roof top tent on top and wheeling some hard trails. I wanted a rack system that tied the loads down to the frame of my Jeep JKU Wrangler Unlimited, so I could sleep on my roof with me and all my gear.
Here’s the scoop on my roof rack set-up.
I’ve had the Rhino Rack Backbone mounting system with a Pioneer Platform roof rack since 2018. In this photo, it’s carrying a soft top roof top tent outskirts of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness near Rockdale, Colorado.

Rhino-Rack Backbone Mounting System

The Rhino-Rack Backbone is an interior structure set up on the inside of the JEEP JK Wrangler, which I needed since I was planning on mounting a roof-top tent to the structure. In the backbone mounting system, three plates on each side of the JEEP’s Hard Top are connected with the interior frame extending your roof line to carry heavier loads with the max load rating of up to 120kg or 264lb.
The mounting system is available in configurations specifically designed for various vehicles, including your your JEEP JL Wrangler, JEEP JT Gladiator, Jeep Renegade, JEEP JL Wrangler, Chevrolet Suburban, Cadillac Escalade & GMC Yukon XL, LAND ROVER Discovery 3&4 and more.
